When you read this, I will be on Sabbatical. Our church Board has generously offer me the three summer months as a time for rest, renewal, and refreshment in order to be ready for the next season of ministry in my own life and in the life of the church. I am deeply grateful for their kindness and blessed by this opportunity.
Finding the time and the means to be rested and renewed does not come easily for any of us. However, from time to time, we need to unplug or we will find ourselves in very difficult places physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Not only are we running a hectic pace at our jobs but often, we also speed through life with extra-cirricular activities like Little League, dance class, swim lessons, exercise classes, and a long list of other good and worthy pursuits. Even our “off” time is quickly filled to overflowing.
On one occasion, the men who worked with Jesus reported to him all the great things which had been happening as a result of their work among the people. It’s found in Mark 6:30-31; “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." Even good things – God things wear us out.
Wayne Cordeiro in his book, Leading on Empty writes, “The only way to finish strong will be to first replenish your system. If you don’t, prepare for a crash.”
My favorite song right now is, “I’ll see you in September when summer is gone….”
